FINE ART
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: With over 25+ years as a practising visual artist, Michael Bonnick's (artist name - MELB) work has been collected by local and international art enthusiasts and showcased on programs such as Lifestyles of the Caribbean (Comedy Central and VH1).
MELB was born in Manchester (United Kingdom) and spent most of his formative years in Jamaica where his creative identity was shaped. It was an amazing student exchange to the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Netherlands (1995) and other European cities that widened his creative vision beyond art. This journey culminated in MELB securing a Diploma in Sculpture and Printmaking from the Edna Manley College (1997). These experiences refined his creative outlook and triggered his desire to return to the United Kingdom for 12 years (London) to pursue an MA Industrial Design degree at Central Saint Martins (UAL, 2006) and Design Technology (QTS, 2011). His current artistic direction seeks to distil and merge his experiences living in Europe with his re-entry into the Jamaican landscape. MELB finds inspiration from everyday things, memories, architectural structures, music, people, film and digital media.
As a multi-disciplinary creative virtuoso, he moves freely between the 2D and 3D planes to infuse anthropomorphic and biomorphic lyrical forms that attempt to playfully disrupt the existing realities between an archetype and meaning, meaning and image, image and reality.
